Recently, while post-editing a translation generated using “Next GenMT GPT-4”, I was not surprised to find a serious error in the meaning of a translated phrase.
The original English sentence read:
“When corticosteroids are taken for a prolonged period, they can suppress the adrenal gland.”
However, the machine translated the English phrase “suppress the adrenal gland.” into Spanish as “… suprimir la glándula renal”, which means “…remove the adrenal gland.”
That single word change completely altered the medical meaning and could have had serious consequences for the target audience.
The English text did not refer to organ removal; it referred to the functional suppression. Long-term – or high-dose – corticosteroid use reduces the adrenal glands’ normal hormone production, which may lead to adrenal insufficiency if treatment is stopped abruptly.
In Spanish, this concept would be accurately rendered as:
“Cuando los corticosteroides se toman durante un período prolongado, pueden reducir o inhibir el funcionamiento normal de las glándulas suprarrenales…”
This experience reinforced a critical point: post-editing is not optional – it is a necessary safeguard.
