We see our mining clients asking us more frequently, “Can you translate this study/report?” followed up almost immediately by “How fast can you do it?” and “How much will AI help you?” The real answer is we don’t know until we have seen what you have ready to go, what you have written.
Why is this the case? Because if a document’s content is not on the “open web”, then the AI tools haven’t been trained on it. As a result, AI can’t help as much as the client would like or expect because there are no references on the internet that can be used by the AI tool. AI will help you best when the material, or something similar, has already been published on the web.
I always remember a conversation with the document control people for one of the largest mining feasibility study projects of its time in Chile.
- My client contact asked, “How soon could you have it ready?”
- I answered, “I don’t know. How long are the documents in pages or words?”
- Client contact answered, “I don’t know. We have a whole room full of projects and studies that need to be translated.”
They had no idea about the number or format of the documents that they needed to be translated, and they had no idea about the number of words that needed translation. So how could the translator help them if they didn’t even know that? How can the translator prepare a quote if you’re not done yet? Exactly.
Having said the above, there are and will be a lot of studies out there which will need to be translated. Let’s start. Let’s talk early in the process about how we can help you.
